Intersectional lecture

Who are you͛?
From were did you learn who you are? Who told you who you are? It’s from your own? or something told you what you HAVE to be and what you are? Maybe your family or your school? that school is a part of state system? Lets say cartoons? see family guy, simpsons, disney cartoons. e.t.c

Stereotyping is a representational practice
—> It reduces the people it is supposed to represent to a
collection of characteristics which are presented as Natural
and essential
—> t is used to establish and normalise difference

Stereotypes are a form of symbolic violence (Bourdieu)
—> They help conceal the arbitrariness of social order and
naturalise the privilege of certain groups
 Symbolic annihilation
—> The symbolic annihilation of women by the mass media

Circuit of Culture: gender
You can see from the photo bellow that blue is for boys and pink is for girls.  But why? Did you ever think why blue for boys and pink for girls? Who told you that?

Dora the Explorer’s makeover in 2009
You can see that Dora changed and became more “woman” from before.  Before she was wearing shorts and t-shirt (no that much like a woman) but now you can see her. She wears dress and she is more thin, she has long hair and she is more like a woman now.

Circuit of Culture: sexuality
You can see from the photos bellow—> Beyonce with Jay-z and Britney Spears kissing kith Maddona. Sexuallity—> men with woman, men with men, woman with woman

Unmarked / Marked (‘Normal’ / Other)
—>marked / unmarked
—>gendered / ungendered
—>female characters / (male) characters

Intersectionality
• There are differences within each category of identity:
Intersectionality breaks down the category of, say, ‘woman’
so that it is not universal and homogenous. The following photos are poster from Gender‐progressive? What about race and class?
Why women naked is art? Why artists draw only naked women? why 85% of the nudes are female? Did you ever think of that? Why?

Progressive Princesses?
Gender, Sexuality and Ethnicity
You can see it from cartoon

—> frozen, than Elsa is more/acting like a “man” (lesbian)—> there goes and the song of frozer (LET IT GO)
—> sponge bob as you all know is gay and he is married to Patric.

Diet Coke: gender, race and class. You have to see this advertise for Diet coke. Woman working in the office as a receptionist and then the man out site working “hard” with muscles e.t.c, looking at him and waiting for him every day to see him. Why???

Gender‐progressive? What about race and class? Sex and the city--> 4 pretty, wonderful, rich, happy, powerful, working woman. They changed the way that woman has to act. No more women's at home, with kids, cooking, cleaning, and actually do nothing for her and to the world.

We gan do it: First photo was just one white woman but later they changed it and there were 3 woman on the photo/poster. (white/black/nationality). Sows that woman can do it, and a woman is equal with mens. Feminism!

Work experience

In Desember, the teacher that teaches us the lesson  “Profesional Studies” told us that we should go for a week in any fashion designer we want for work experience. I chose to go to Natar Georgiou which are two young and new fashion designers with specialty in embroidery. The reason I went to them is not only that they are young and new designers and I could learn from them how it is to be fresh fashion designer in Cyprus, but because of the embroidery they do on their designs and do not forget that in Cyprus is a tradition, which many countries admire. So I went there and I’ve learned a lo of them.  They teach me how to do embroidery, how you sew it on fabric, knitting machine e.t.c
Thank’s to Natar Gewrgiou that accepted us to go to their atelier and they made me think and feel to many feelings.  To learn how to fight, cooperate, love, how to manage my time and don't be stressed. Also to know what is stress and anxious but how you overcoming them. Last but not least how to be grounded famous fashion designer. One day I want to become like them, not only famous but famous with good soul and love for what I do.

Some photos of what I've done there:

social media

What is social media?

The Frankfurt school—>native words—>school of thinking
Germany- Jewish- second world war in Usa-nazi

False needs—> desires encourage by consumers

The Culture Industry’ 1944
– Homogeneous—> (standardised, uniform, all working
in the same way)
– Predictable—> (we know what form the song will
take from the first few bars, or how the tension in
a Hollywood film will be resolved)

look at the photo below—> all look the same but there are chocolates—> by Andreas Gursky

Mass media- Black Mirror ’15 Million Merits’

Our tutor showed us a video about mass media, because our theme for the certain lecture was mass media. After the lecture he showed us this video. Then we realized what exactly mass media is, because is deferent when you just hear what it is and deferent when you SEE  video e.t.c that is based on mass media. Black mirror is a British TV series and one of its episodes is ’15 Million merits’ that we’ ve seen in class.

Video:

Imagine a future powered by people on exercise bikes, where rooms are made up of walls of screens and the only chance to escape is by going on a reality television show. Welcome to the world of black mirrors. Writers Charlie Brooker and Kanak ‘Konnie’ Huq have created a scathing critique of reality TV shows, with ‘The X Factor’ in mind. It is a scintillating piece that addresses how these shows work and how they manipulate and meld people so that they can be sold on the market. Also this episode creates is unique yet has a strong basis in today's world, the ending of the episode has this great message regarding the influence of the media on the ideas of the individual.

Last it is about our society entering uncharted waters with all the technology surrounding us, that gives single individuals incredible powers.

You all have to see this small movie/video. You will understand a lot of how mass media affect us. You will change how you think about all this Tv shows like 'X factor' e.t.c and of course how 'government' and the rest of the world affect us, changing out thoughts, make us fell, think, work all the same like we are their pawns.
